Stanley Cup rings stolen in Bronfman break-in

Two Stanley Cup rings from the 1970s are among jewellery worth more than $1 million that has been stolen from the Toronto home of one of Canada's wealthiest families, police say.
Police say about 59 items including the rings and a third ring worth $350,000 were taken from a home in the Bathurst Street and St. Clair Avenue West area owned by the Bronfman family during a break-in this weekend.
Det. Lisa Benoit did not identify which family members owned the hoeme or its exact location. She said the items were mainly necklaces, bracelets and earrings, with some of the diamonds as large as 5 to 6 carats. The other stones included pearls and rubies.
Two of the rings were from the 1974 and 1976 Stanley Cup champion Montreal Canadiens then owned by Peter and Edward Bronfman. The family name was engraved on the side of the rings. The brothers owned the Canadiens between 1971 and 1978, winning four Cups in those years. They settled in Toronto and co-founded the Edper Group.
"It's few and far between when you get a break-in of this value," Det. Benoit said at a press conference at Toronto Police Headquarters this morning.
She said that the property was broken into between 7:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. Saturday night while the family was out. The culprits broke in through a second storey side window house and took a 200-lb. (90 kg.) safe.
Police can't say how many people were involved but are reviewing security video and canvassing the area to gather any possible leads.

I think that this break in was probably an inside job. I still do not understand though, how they bypassed the security system to lift out a 200 pound safe and get there hands on 2 Stanley Cup rings! Hopfully they find the people that did it and return the stuff safely.

Answer: I think it would prob need more than a small number of people, because in the house that they lived in, there is so many safety system and camera and guards. So Therefore, it is either an inside job or a group of experts.

I think that the thieves did planned about this. Because it would a lot more than just "going in" to steal those 2 ring

What are the important factors about the Stanley cup championship rings, and especially for Canadian families?
Answer: The ring is the prove that they had won the stanely cup and hockey is the most famous game across Canada. Therefore, having to known that they won the stanely cup is a something really big to be proud of, and losing the ring is a really big lost to their families.

I think that probably three or four people would have to carry this big safe.

I think the theives must have planned it out because you can't just go into a locked safe without any information or planning about it.

Stanley Cup rings are probably very special to this family because it is really hard to win a Cup in the first place and they are worth a ton of money

I think that there must have been two or three people stealing the safe because they broke in through the window and got out through the same window. This means that they must have lowered the safe out the window which they could have used a rope for. Also I think the robbers were men because the robbers would of had to be very strong and heavy

There was a broke in the one of the richies family in canada. They stole 200lb safe.
1. I think their is a lot of people in this break because not a lot of people that can carry that much.
2. I think they aready plan or else it wouldn't be that easy to go in
3. It is really important because a lot of guys watch hockey and play hockey. So they are exicted about who is going to win.

I think the thieves enter the house when the family went to dinner. The thieves wait until the family went to dinner, then they enter and stole 200 lb. And leave without leaving anything.

It might be possible because I'm guessing there was alot of them because theres no way one person could carey that safe. Yes they would have to plan it pretty good to steal to stanley cup rings and the safe and they had to Know where it was so that they didn't run out of time. Well the stanley cup ring are from the NHL and its really something big if you win them, plus it was lots of money.

I think that the people had been planing this for a long time but I don't think that this is an inside job because the people who did this would probubly have to be very smart and if you where close to them than they would not have used it.

I think that this was an inside job. Someone knew the safe was there. They must of saw this coming because why would someone keep a 200 pound (lb) safe with millions of dollars worth of jewelrey in it. They should have kept it in a bank. This does not realate to what we have studied so far.

The thiefs must have had someone on the inside because if it is one of the richest families in Canada, because they would have very heavy security on the house. I don't understand how the culprats carried a 200 (lb) safe out the window and down two stories.

This was a very informative article about the break and enter that occured this weekend. It is very unfortunate that this had to happen but it shows us that Canada is not a perfect country and that we still have alot to correct. I think it would have taken 3 or so very strong men to carry a 200 pound safe and quite a skilled person to break in to this house which probably has very high security.I think that the theives would know about th e rings because people who own them are fairly known. Thanks Andy for the cool article.

I think that this would have taken more then one person probibly two or three people would have had to try it. I think that they might have broken the window as a divertion. I think eventualy the police will find the people that did this. But the people that live should tighten up security.

This is ridiculous how could a few men break into a mulit million dollar house and steal a 200 pound safe. Was there alarm on??? People that fortunate must have a big security system. How did they get the safe out the window onto the ground safely, if the alarm did go off and no body turned it off the police should have showed up whinin minutes of the break in.
