Old Growth Forests

Protecting Old Growth Forests

Value found in old-growth forests
SEAN PATRICK SULLIVAN
The Canadian PressSeptember 4, 2008 at 1:51 PM EDTVANCOUVER — Leaving British Columbia's old-growth forests standing may make more economic sense than cutting them down for timber, especially as the province looks to strategies to cut global warming, a new B.C. study suggests. The report from Simon Fraser University challenges the status quo and uses Ministry of Forest data to show that conservation wins out over logging when forests are valued for their role in capturing carbon from the atmosphere, protecting endangered species and providing opportunities for recreation. The study backed by three environmental groups – Wilderness Committee, David Suzuki Foundation, and Ecojustice – used computer modelling to look at a variety of conservation and logging scenarios in a large tract of forest near Vancouver. In almost every scenario, the researchers said, they found that the value of the carbon captured and stored by the trees far outweighed the value of the lumber harvested from the logs.Internet LinksB.C. forest information map Faisal Moola, science director for the David Suzuki Foundation, called the results a clear indicator that B.C. should be protecting its old-growth forest as it works with other western provinces to reduce global warming.“The old-growth forests that we have are not only going to be a benefit in the fight against climate change, but there's also a significant economic windfall that could be celebrated by British Columbians,” he said.

This makes totall sense they should have stopped cutting down the trees a long time ago. The carbon captured by the trees is definetly a big amount. I don't get why they just realized this. At least they are going to start now.

I think that BC should not cut down the trees and leave them as they are

The forest will die and it will cost
global warming when you cut down trees

If they let them cut down all the trees in the forest, B.C. will have less wildlife and logs and many othersd things that you can get from a old growth forest.

Deforestation. It is one of the biggest concern in the world right now. I believe that it will be disadvantaging if Canada cut down the old growth trees. Clear cutting, and other various technologies to cut down the trees unresponsibly, and so on. Those problems has destroyed our nature and made it hard to recover by nature it self. In my opinion, we should start taking our country's future and cooperate with dedication to find the solutions for this problem. I strongly know that our wants right now is not as important as our future.

This logging will affect Canada's furure becasue trees are used for everything wether it be paper to carbon, they are too valubal to be cutting down. This is probably one of the main factors of global warming. That is why people should stop cutting trees and only cut for the necessities.

This article is a growing concern, if they continue to do the logging at the rate they are going, there will be no more forests, which will enhance global warming. But, if they maintain the forests then global warming should not increase. Saving our forests will save everything in and around the forests. Just as nature wanted it to be.

this is good that they will stop because it's the reason for global warming and this will make are world safer

The logging that is happening this moment will not do well for the future of Canada becasue trees are used for everything nowadays. They are bein used for things like paper and pulp and there may not enough left, if this keeps going on, to create enough oxygen. These trees are very important to all life in Canada because they hold homes to animals and provinde us air to breathe. Cutting down trees is a large factor in causing a major issue facing the world today, global warming. We can keep on cutting down trees but we have to plant more if we are going to keep on cutting them down, to maintain an equal balance as to not effect the ecosystem.
